Underwater Archaeology Course 2023 description

The Underwater Archaeology Course 2023 (7 days, 6 dives) is designed for sport divers with an interest in underwater archaeology, students of archaeology and professionals working in the field of cultural heritage.

All theoretical and practical exercises are guided and accompanied by professional archaeologists and dive instructors. In the theoretical part of the course, participants will get to know the most important archaeological sites of Calabria (Lokroi Epizephyrioi and Kaulon). In addition, they we’ll visit the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria (MArRC), the most important of the region, finding out more about “Riace Bronzes”, two original bronze Greek statues dating back to the V century b.C., one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries in the Mediterranean.

The practical part of the course deals with the most important methods of underwater archeology. At a simulated site, the participants learn different survey and documentation methods (position fixing, measurement methods trilateration and offset, drawing, photo), the setting up of an excavation area, the use of the dredge and the recovery of finds.

Afterwards, if the sea conditions will allow it (with the authorization of the Archaeological Superintendency), we will visit the Underwater Archaeological Park of Kaulon.
